For those of us who use Hypercard as a base environment in multi-meg Macs, this little implementation will come in handy. It is designed to work in conjunction with a disk catalogue program such as DiskQuick‚Ñ¢ (my personal favorite).
DiskQuick can generate a text file catalogue of your entire disk library that can then be read by Hypercard into this utility. Doing a Find search for the desired file is a simple and speedy matter.
This was thrown together in a couple of hours on a weekend and is not intended to be elegant or complete. For instance, once you locate the file, you may have to flip a card back to find the disk location. Very inelegant, but quicker and more convenient than having DoubleHelix‚Ñ¢ running just this in the background all day eating a meg of Ram. At least when Hypercard eats the meg you have a rich environment just a click away. That is not to detract from DHelix, it is just a case of killing a housefly with a cannon.
One word on generating a disk library. Number your disks physically (you can use those little price stickers found in stationery stores) and if possible rename them to match the numbers (this isn't possible with programs that require their disks be named after them). This will make any searches much easier when you reach out to pick up the disk.
Included here is a sample of my library just for example's sake. Please delete those cards and build your own. By the way, you do not have to do any "new card" commands to add to your list. Simply click on Open data file and type the name of your text data file that you exported from your catalogue progam. Hypercard will automatically add cards to fit. Don't worry about which card you are on, either. Use this application as a "slush space" using the Find function to navigate. Afterall, who reads the phone directory cover to cover?
